Retiring to France with dual citizenship with Italy

Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. My husband and I would like to retire to France within the next year or so.
I have dual citizenship with Italy but my husband does not. I have two questions:

1. Can my husband move to France without a visa because I am an EU citizen?

2. Will he recieve the same type of medical benefits as I would because we are married?

Thanks so much for any information. Not having much luck searching the web .

Deb

For 1. have a look here maybe you find the answer. In any case your husband need what is called a 'carte de sejour'
For 2. Medical services and benefits depend what kind of insurance you have.

Isn“t this something your embassy can answer, rather than an internet forum ?

I agree with Peejee -- I think you should get complete information from a French consulate. Retiring to France is not the same as coming for a long stay. The link in #2 doesn't even mention health insurance. Health care is not free in France and you would have to buy insurance to cover yourselves.

Yes, you should check with the French authorities, perhaps beginning with the Prefecture in your department. However, I can tell you that as an American citizen I was given a Carte Vital (health benefits) based on the fact that I am married to a European. We are both retired. Should also work for you. We pay our taxes in France (ouch!). Based on my experience with friends it seems that is it not always straightforward, but if refused, continue to try.

First, you should state what passport your husband holds.

He will NOT be allowed to stay without a visa just because you are married. But he may qualify for a residence permit based on being married to you. Howevern since you will be sponsoring him, the French authorities may want to see proof of income (I brought in my non-EU wife but had a job so that helped).

Health care is not free and I don't know whether you would even qualify because you haven't paid into the system. Research this carefully.
