Planning first trip to Barbados....advice/suggestions are welcome
We (3 or 4 couples) are thinking about taking a trip this upcoming March and are looking into Barbados. We are on a budget and I am aware that Barbados is a fairly expensive island, but we are thinking about doing a vacation rental to save with accommodation costs. We aren’t interested in glitz and glam. We just want to relax, drink, and spend time at the beach.
Ideally, we want to find a vacation rental in a relatively safe area that is within walking distance to beaches/restaurants/pubs. We prefer calm beaches to turbulent ones, but rentals in the South Coast are much cheaper than the West. Does the South Coast have any beaches that are good for shallow swimming/wading? Maybe Enterprise/Miami Beach?
I guess my main questions are:
Can Barbados be done on a budget? Is dining out very expensive? We have been to Bermuda and dining out was extremely expensive (eg; $20.00 for a burger and fries).
What part of the island would suit our needs the best?
One of the couples traveling with us may be a female same-sex couple. Are they going to have any problems in Barbados? I know that the Caribbean isn’t particularly gay-friendly.
Thanks for your help.

Barbados is fantastic. the mix between tourists and locals is one of the best as everyone goes everywhere. the prices are nowhere near those you quoted for bemuda. we stayed at pirates inn near browns beach. there are plenty of reasonably priced bars, restaurants in that area plus supermarkets and the bus into bridgetown which cost peanuts runs along that coastal road. there are little rum shops all over the place. as for gay couples. it's not like Jamaica.you might get the odd raised eyebrow a bit like your granny used to do but basically nobody cares and their is a small gay community in Barbados. i've been to over 70 countries and it is the most open, friendly country i've been to. have fun & enjoy
