Advice Kruger Park neededHello,
I'm planning for weeks now! i.e. the "big lines", 2 months in South Africa. Now getting to the details :) :I'll be leaving the Blyde River Canyon on the 19/2/2013 (by small rental car) and going to Kruger where I have now a reservation to do the "Olifantstrail", starting on the 24/2/2013 around noon from Letaba Camp. Where do I go these 5 days before I start the trail? I'll be camping only so restricted to the camps that have campsites, luckily most have....Has anyone suggestions for a certain route? Mostly self-driving but willing to take a guided gamedrive here and there...but where best? No budget for expensive private reserves though! But how 'private' are they now? I read they took all fences down to create a "greater Kruger" so does that mean you can drive to areas that were 'off limits' before (apart from guests of those private game reserves)? All advice welcome! thanks,

2There's no camping at Olifants, unfortunately - just bungalows. Balule is just across the river and is an awesome camp. Not a restcamp though. There are no facilities like the larger camps. But it's very peaceful.
If I had 5 days, I'd split it between Lower Sabie and Satara. Both have campsites and are exceptional for game viewing.
Alternatively, if you wanted to stay in the north, Tsendze is fabulous. No electricity. Solar showers. Gas communal freezer etc. It's up near Mopani.

3fences have been taken down between Kruger National Park and many surrounding private game reserves, this allows a greater area for the wildlife. You can't drive between different reserves though, humans and vehicles can only enter / exit via gates. So no those areas are still off limits. The dates you are visiting are not school holidays and are during the week so even Kruger will be relatively quiet.

We went on a 'Nhongo Safari' last summer. It was an open vehicle drive Kruger Park Safari ...it was amazing, we loved it! We didn't get to see all the 'Big 5', but we did manage to come to face to face with the african rhinos and elephants..wow, nerve chilling, a south african safari we will never forget!

5Thanks for all replies here to all!
As it is the advice I was looking for...So, seems I'll do best by starting at Lower Sabie and next to Satara, maybe a night at Balule...But I came up with another question: after Kruger I'll be going to Swaziland and was planning to visit there Malolotja, Mlilwane, Hlane, Mkhaya...now I'm doubting wether I'd better spend some more time in Kruger and less in Swazi as I read nice reviews for Mlilwane but rather a lot of people who didn't like Hlane much (as many animals in enclosures so that you get the feeling of being in a large zoo rather then in a nature park...). So, instead of 2 days in Hlane, spend them somewhere in Kruger...What would your advice then be: spend more time at the places already planned (Lower Sabie+Satara+Balule+Letaba) or go to other camps...maybe in the North (Punda Maria seems good, or Tsendze?).
Later I'll go to St.Lucia and Imfolozi and Addo, Tsitsikamma...so I'm mostly looking for places that are different from these...
Thanks again for your kind replies!

Are you still planning on Blyde River before Kruger?
If you are starting in Lower Sabie and ending up at Letaba, then it makes sense to save Blyde River after Kruger and then drive to Swaziland. Just a suggestion.
If you can add days, I would add them to Kruger. I'd be inclined to add to the places you already have to minimize moving too much. If I were to add another camp, I would add Shingwedzi. Alternatively, consider sleeping overnight at Sable Hide (near Phalaborwa). I have never done these but I want to. You get to spend the night at a hide and it can be rather adventurous.
Hope this helps.
