Is it easy to get to Khao San Road in the early hours?

Hi all,

I am travelling to Thailand early January and my plan arrives at 1.20am in the morning. Is it advisable to try and get to Khao San Road at this time in the morning, i hear it is around 45 mins away? Or would i be better to get a hostel near to the airport for the first night?

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers
Kirsty

I don’t see a problem going to KSR in the early morning. When I was in Bangkok in January the street was crowded until the early morning. However, it might be a good idea to book a hotel before your arrival. Just mention that you will arrive after 2am.

Taxis run 24 hours from the metered taxi rank on the ground level, and traffic will be light so it should be an easy ride (a lot better than the following morning). Many guesthouses have 24-hour reception so checking in shouldn't be a worry. Probably book a room in advance and make sure their reception is open late.

About the only way to get to KSR at 3-4AM is by taxi. Traffic will be lite. Book at least one night and be sure to tell the hotel the time of your flight's arrival and approximate time of your arrival at the hotel, remember it takes a bit of time to clear passport control, collect your luggage, and get to the taxi stand. While in the airport change some money, and be sure to get some small bills to pay the taxi.

Hi,

Best time to go in my opinion. Quicker and if you go via normal roads even a little cheaper.

Or bring a sleeping mat and sleep at the airport and go in at a civilised time next morning. Note that places calling themselves 'hostels' tend to be more expensive and commercialised than ordinary guesthouses many of which don't have advance booking.

why should someone sleep on a mat at the airport? beds are only 30-45 minutes away... and if the OP is not too tired she can also eat something or get e few drinks somewhere around the KSR.

They don't have to , just suggesting another option so the info is more complete. In my opinion I would prefer to sleep at airport for these reasons.

1, After long flight I would prefer to sleep there and then rather than go on 25-30 km journey in the small hours. And by the time you get there there will not be many hours of darkness left anyway.
2 By the time plane has docked and luggage is collected it might be about 2:20 am - wouldn't feel the need to eat or drink something at that hour.
3 By arriving in morning time there will be more guesthouses open to choose from.
4 By going in the morning one can take public transport rather than have to deal with taxi drivers.

What everyone else said: Book hotel in Khao San in advance, take the taxi = 45/60 min.
Search the TT Thread for finding them.

Why would you sleep in the bloody airport ? lol, ... might as well pay for a taxi (WITH A METER) and have a kip in the cab before ya get to khoa san road, have a bite to eat there as theres always somewhere open, and hotels are in abundance there ranging in prices
