Budget for 4 weeks in Myanmar

Hi all,

I am going on a 4-week trip to Myanmar with 4 friends this coming December/January, and we are somewhat in doubt of how much money to bring. We are budget travellers and want to stay in low-end guesthouses and eat mostly street food or in cheap restaurants, but also want to be able to take a domestic flight and/ot hire a car + driver for a few days while there. We plan to visit Yangon, Inle Lake, Mrauk U, possibly Bagan and a beach somewhere + do a 4-5 day hike somewhere.

Can anyone who has recently been to Myanmar offer us some advice about the prices for food/accomodation/transportation and how much they spent while there? I was thinking of bringing 1500 USD, but aiming to spend only 1000 USD - is this realistic, do you think?

Also, tips about what to do/what not to do while in Myanmar are also welcomed :-)

All the best,

Sara

Also, as the time around Christmas/New Year is peak season, are there any places a bit off the beaten track you would advise us to visit first in order to avoid the throngs of people around the main attractions? We were thining of visiting Hsipaw for some trekking/hiking, for example. We are in the country from Dec. 24 - Jan 19.

My budget all inclusive last year except airasia flights BKK ret ($80) was $525 for 30 days (included $9 3 days overstay) but from what I see this year is going to be expensive with budget Gh's charging much more than the $4-$8 I paid last year B&B however with 2 or 3 or 4 sharing a room deals can be struck however I suggest each of you take 8 X $100 bills and $200 in smaller denominations
whne you arrive yangon prebook bus direct to mandalay then overnight bus to Inle (gets you there ahead of crowd so maybe rooms at Gypsy or queens. then pick up day trip Taungyyi and after Inle local pick up to Kalow stay overnight and enxt am after breakfast take bus to Bagan and then after overnight bus to Yangon if you want to add golden rock jump off Bago or junction to golden rock also side trip maybe Hsipaw or Monwya if Monwya the reorute ie mandalay Monwya baganinle kalow yangon route
next question

I've just finished 3.5 weeks travel and have used just over $1,000, however I was travelling by myself, so things like guest houses are a bit more expensive for me. I didn't do it as cheaply as I could have either but I didn't take any internal flights and always joined up with others for treks and tours etc.

I would say $1,500 would be more than enough for you, but it's probably worth taking around that much just in case.

I just finished three weeks, traveled with a friend, spent about $1000, including a few nights in Thailand, and bought lots of souveneirs...It was easy to do it cheaper...but we went for comfort...

hello i just finished a 4 week trip and i just spend around 1000$ , i was staying in cheap guest house, travelled by bus and eat very cheap, you can do it, but if your planning on taking flights, then you will be tight, each leg of flight cost around 90 to 120$.

Spent 12 days in the country and used 1500€ = $1900, including 3 internal flights, long cross country taxi ride and staying in midrange hotels ($40 to $100/night). I would not like to be caught with less than enough money. Take more than enough, bring the extra back.
