Yes, but things are changing so quickly in Myanmar that searching for old posts is useless. We want new, up-to-date information!

In answer to the OP, basically:No, if your on a budget.
Yes, if you want to pay through the nose and probably wait days for the privilege.
Air Bagan purport to do flights from Yangon to Chiang Rai, costs about US$170.

I spent some time searching, I found tools4fools website which provides updated info on myanmar borders:http://www.tools4fools.info/MyanmTravelFacts.html
Seems that you have to apply in yangon then it will take 2 weeks to process.
Thanks #4 for posting the Air Bagan idea, it seems they do have this flight but I wonder how we book it. Anyway.
I'll just stick to flying to Chiang mai via BKK using AirAsia, seems by far the cheapest way.

You're welcome Battambang (great name, great place)I would imagine a Yangon Travel Agent would be able to assist.

IF it is currently possible to exit Myanmar via Taichileik into Mae Sai you would need at least the MTT permit which is around $50 US, plus likely another $15 for a compulsory guide to escort you from the Taichileik airport to the border crossing...same if you fly into Kengtung....either way you have to fly to one of those towns from Mandalay/Heho/Yangon anyway....you can't get there by land...the MTT permit takes up to 2 weeks to obtain. In Jan 2011 I enquired about this at Yangon MTT office and was told the above, then again in Feb 2012 was told similar, but that it would require a special request/permission from higher level of govt....will be trying again in early Feb 2013...maybe someone else can try sooner and let us all know..??
