Bringing Cigars to Mexico

Hi,I am asking if anyone has any idea of taking cigars into Mexico.I am flying on a direct flight soon and want to bring a good amount as I will be spending this winter and next winter down thier.I plan on putting the bulk of them in a check-in bag,but also carry on a dozen or so.I actually want to bring like 75 of them in the check-in bag.Is this a stupid idea,or is it possible to pull this off.The reason I dont want to buy them down there is I have Dominican cigars, and evidently Mexico has a law that they dont sell Dominican cigars.Anyone ever attempt to bring a large amount of cigars before? Thanks in advance.

quick search on google: in 2006 you were allowed 20 cigars. When you get where you are going, ask the locals if they know where you can get some macuchi, native tobacco that reminded me of what a cigar is like from about the middle onwards.

I've flown in several times with cigars and never had any problems. I don't remember how many I had, at least a box of 20 or 25, most likely more. I don't think I ever traveled with anything except a carry-on bag. The Mexicans never checked in the airport on arrival, although I suppose it is possible if you get a "red light." (You know about the red light/green light system, don't you?)

I wouldn't worry about it, although it is always possible that you might get a red light, which would initiate a search of your luggage. This is unlikely, but if I were you I would try to learn how to say, in Spanish, the following; 1) I smoke a cigar every day, 2) I am going to be in Mexico for three months, and 3) You don't seriously expect me to smoke Mexican cigars, do you?

It might also be a smart idea to learn to say "Christmas is coming" and "do you smoke cigars?"

But seriously, I entered the country (driving) last week with about 250-300 cigars, enough to last me the winter. And then I got a red light at the inland customs check (about 15 miles in from the border). No problem at all. I was on my way again in about 20 seconds.

If you are going to Aguascalientes (doubtful), there is a cigar store on the main square in the center of town who will sell you a tolerable product at a fair price.

In San Andres Tuxtla, Veracruz, is located the Santa Clara cigar factory. The problem here is that the cigars in San Andres--at the factory--where they are made--sell for about double the price that you can buy them from JR Cigars of North Carolina!

I happen to prefer the Mexican cigars I've tried, mostly the better line of Te Amos, as I found the Habanos I tried too strong as well as too expensive. (Even in Mexico.)

Andreas is good, too.

I go with Anonimo on this one, even to the point of saying that the Mexican cigars I've had are the best I've ever had - anywhere. Haven't smoked the Te Amos, but the Montejo and San Andres stogies I've had put any Honduran, Dominican or Cuban smoke to shame. Buy'em fresh and soft in Veracruz.

meant to add,

I usually bring a carton of cigarettes on my trips to Mexico without problem (excpet that my Mexican friends smoke about half of them up). But even then, I prefer Mexican cigarettes now, so I take fewer American smokes every trip. The point is, I've never had a problem bringing in a carton of cigarettes.

Bringing cigars to Mexico is like bringing chocolate to Switzerland. There are lots of local, Cuban seed cigars to be enjoyed.
Plus bringing in that amount may cost you some cigars, they do pay attention.

I always looks forward to Mexican cigars and Cubans when I go. Why don't you bring the maxium allowed and mix it up with what you can get locally- I would have to think you would enjoy it.

Wow Gary. but still, 600 cigars?

Couple years ago I crossed into the U.S. at El Paso from Juarez with a bottle of Cuban rum in my bags. The customs guy said he'd confiscate it then laughed, said Merry Christmas, and gave it back to me.

Ok, well I just checked out the Sanborn's here in Zacatecas for curiosity's sake. It appeared to me that only Cubans and Mexican cigars were offered. A Cohiba Rubusto was 360 pesos ($30) and a Te Amo "neditation" (6x44) was 43 pesos, so about the same as you can mail-order from JR. But, if you don't particularly care for Mexican cigars and can't afford Cubans, I'd say bring your own.
