Khao Lak

Hello

I was wondering what would be the best beach to stay around. I am not a good swimmer so I just like a beach that I can suntan read and maybe play in the water up to my chest?

Hi Joan. I have no idea, I've never been to Kao Lak. As a fellow Canadian and long time poster like yourself, I'm glad to hear you made it this year. Snowing here in Edmonton.

There is good for swimming and relaxing on the beach (a long beach stretching) uncrowded beaches like Patong.
You will like it there.

Patong is not near Khao Lak at all...about 165 km south.

The best beach for you would be White Sand Beach. This is on the inside (North side) of cape Pakarang and is a very good beach ...we play with our kids there all the time as do others. There are gentle waves and a very relaxed pace.

White Sand is indeed a nice one - and a safe one. One problem - it is a real haul from central Khao Lak. Fine if you are staying near/on White Sand.
If you have booked central Khao Lak, I suggest Sunset Beach which you reach by going down from town central to the beach, turning left and walking to the section near the headland - maybe 500m.
Some nice accomm in this area (+Baan Krating+ is a good lower midranger), although true budget a bit scarce. The closest is probably Phu Khao Lak.

Wilberry - how right you are!

Sadly - Sunset beach can have strong undertow and the OP asked about beaches that are easy to play in. The protected area on the North side of Cape Pakarang makes for the safest beaches.

Nangtong beach seems to be one of the busiest beaches in Khaolak. Bang Niang is also nice but a but further away from the center.

Useful info Diver - can we clarify it a bit?

Seems to me "undertow" refers to a rip current. No such thing as a rip current which drags you under the water btw - but we won't get sidetracked on that little issue.
Now rip currents are caused by all that water carried by the swash (broken section) of incoming waves having to get back out to sea again - and if there is a headland that is a favoured position for a rip current to run out. And Sunset Beach has the headland - so sure, when there are waves about you can expect a rip current there.
But waves in dry season are very rare. Wet season yeah - I could be just about 100% certain a rip current will run along the headland then.
