Hong Kong, and then......?Hi all,
I'm in the early stages of planning a trip to Hong Kong with my boyfriend, to visit his sister, so the HK part of the trip is easy - she'll show us around and we'll stay in her apartment.
What I'm looking for inspiration on is where else to head when we've come halfway across the world. we're likely to travel in October or November and make it a 3 week trip with about a week in HK and the rest in 2 or 3 other places. Possibly a combination of cities and beaches....
I'll be travelling with my boyfriend, both in our late 20s and neither of us are seasoned travellers - city breaks in Europe being our most exotic experiences!
What are your top destination recommendations? Places to avoid? Overrated cities...??
Thanks for all wisdom! :)

1Depends how important beaches are? There are some ok beaches in Hong Kong, and weather in October or early November can still be good. Then you could go into China - perhaps Guilin (Yangshuo), Xi'an and Beijing. Fly back home from Beijing. If China, make sure you go after the first week of October.
Alternately, if beaches are important, fly from Hong Kong to Bangkok, see somewhere like Ayutthaya or Kanchanaburi, and then head south to one of the islands and a nice beach.

2I tell my friends who come to Asia for the first time that after the urban energy in HK, a very different cultural experience should be on the menu. Bali is my top recommendation -- a week spent partly at a beach, and then (as the beachy areas are also very touristy) somewhere in the Ubud area, with emphasis on exploring Bali's unique culture and civilization.
Other than Bali, Thailand also offers a culturally interesting experience, with resorts on the beaches. The rainy season along the Andaman Sea coast (e.g. Phuket, Krabi) is usually ending by late October, so the precise dates of your trip may make a difference in that regard. (There are also many resorts on the Gulf of Thailand that are not affected by that seasonal difference.) If you do decide to visit Thailand, try to do a 3-way combination of a beach resort, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai in the north.
