End of the world/ Mayan calendar

I was looking for something to do around December 21st. I'm living in Xela right now but am open to suggestions all around Guatemala. I am not too interested in Tikal as it sounds like a madhouse (unless someone can convince me its worth it) but anything else from festivals to smaller scale ceremonies or anything anyone has heard of is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you are in Guatemala for a short period of time you really ought to go to see Tikal. I know you are asking about a specific date, but figured I would throw that out there. I cannot even imagine what the horde of new age nut bags will be like at Tikal for that time period. One thing is for sure though, the people watching at Tikal on the 21st has got to be downright excellent.

I visited Iximche on March 21 a few years ago and the Maya were doing naming of new born children ceremonies, blessing of the seed. Interesting thing was there were two groups of Maya using the same temple, one inclusive of gringos and one not. Myself, I'm looking at Mixco Viejo as a possibility for Dec. 20/21. I'll consider Iximche as a back up if I have trouble getting a car for the drive out to Viejo.

I would make some enquiries before racing off anywhere. From what I understand, the archaeological sites were selling limited entries for the Baktun ceremonies, and these entries are now sold out for the major sites (like Tikal) and maybe the minor ones as well.

But there's very little concrete information around, and the above may not be accurate. Best at this point would be contacting the sites (or their governing bodies) directly - you can get their phone numbers here, by clicking on the "Baktuns Route" menu

Being that you are in Xela, I would suggest Takalik Abaj, which is a very nice site not far from Retalhuleu. It's also a little obscure (many Guatemalans have never even heard of it) and kind of distant from the capital, so I guess there is a chance that it is not sold out yet.
