2 hrs in Mexico City

We arrive in MEX at 3:55 pm and depart for Veracruz at 7:45 pm. After customs/immigration, terminal transfer and checkin for our AeroMexico flight to Veracruz, we have just over two hours to wait. We're thinking of having dinner somewhere in the city.

Is it worth taking the Metro or metrobus downtown? Is there somewhere closer to the airport that would save a little time? Do we have the time math right?

The Metro will take you nearly an hour at that time of day to get to (and from) the centro historico. I haven't taken the Metrobus yet, but without transfers, it should be faster. Still, that doesn't leave you much, if any, time to eat! I can't think of any attractive neighbourhoods closer to the airport.

There are lots of places to eat inside the airport although less options in Terminal 2. If there is nothing there that takes you fancy take a quick cab ride to Terminal 1 (they may not let you on the train) where there are many more eating options (get the train back).

Last year, it took me two hours to get through Immigration and customs at the airport in Mexico City.

My suggestion is to catch a snack at the airport, and have a great seafood dinner when you get to Veracruz!

You do not have time to get downtown and still leave you a comfortable safety margin before your next flight.

I suggest you hang out in and explore the airport. Have a couple of tacos and suck down a few beers. The time will be gone before you know it!

If you’re not allowed to take the shuttle between the airport terminals, there is also a shuttle bus that costs about 10 pesos. Terminal 1 offers some fine dining options, as well as the food court. Terminal 2, too, actually but there are less choices there. Terminal 1 also has a lot more shops to explore.

You can go eat dinner in the city, but you will probably wind up taking the bus to Veracruz.

I'm with the "stay at the airport" recommendations.

And the immediate area around the airport is not worth leaving the airport for, I assume? (in particular, Terminal 2 where we'll end up after checking in to our AM flight)

Thanks forall the advice. I just don't like airports much :(

Assume that you'll need as much as an hour to re-enter the airport, pass-through the security checkpoint and get to your departure gate. That gives you maybe an hour to play with. It would take you probably 40 minutes combined to walk to/from anyplace near the airport ... if something of interest was nearby. Terminal 2 has an interesting food court the business of which are not your typical international fast food companies. Time is too short. Stay put. Have something to eat/drink.

The airport has branches of places that have good reputation in Mexico City. This includes:
Bistro Mosaico in Terminal 1.
El Farolito en Terminal 2,
La Buena Tierra en Terminal 1,
Tortas Don Polo in Terminal 2

Besides not having enough time for 'al centro' some of the airport restaurants can take forever to get your food to you....I did notice that T1 now has lots of open space in the food court what with T2 open now taking a large load of passengers off of T1.
