I had a similar approach in Kuala Lumpur years ago from a young man, or similar in the sense that he wanted someday to come and study in my home country.It turned out that every word of his unlikely story was true. His older brother was a senior federal minister and the family was wealthy. They hosted us at an amazing compound outswide the city for a coupe of meals. Lovely guy, have lost track of him now. He ended up going to school in California.

Well, it is easy to say on forums 'why not answer this' etc. I think to the credit of unlucky travellers being tricked: it is not always that easy to keep thinking 'SCAM check!' at all times, esp if you are a good while into your travel period and relaxed. Also, I think most people do habitually trust other people.I'll now post my trip report as another thread. :)
