FitzRoy temperature

I'm planning a trip to Argentina/Chile during the month of December and will stay in hostels alone in a few places, at the refugios in Torres del Paine with a friend, and in a tent camping with another group at FitzRoy.

I was thinking about bringing just a fleece sleeping bag instead of a regular sleeping bag to cut down on weight. It should be sufficient for hostels, and I believe for TdP too within the refugios, right? My only concern is camping at FitzRoy. It will be the last week of December, but still - how cold will it get at night? Also, what about 2 fleece bags, one inside the other? (if my friend and I both bring them to TdP, he can leave his bag with me after that part of the trip, less for him to carry back anyway!)

Most hostels don't allow sleeping bags and provide clean linen to use. As for temperatures, even though its summer, things can still get cold at night. I had a +5 sleeping bag and it was still freaking cold at night. Maybe go to a 0 or -5 sleeping bag. Or take a sleeping bag liner.

Several overlapping issues:

Temps in the mountains depend on altitude as well as season. Depending where you're tenting at El Chalten it might be quite cold....or not.

Your ability to get comfortable while trekking depends on your ability to stay dry, hydrated and fed. Weather in the Fitzroys is notoriously undependable, and if you're out walking around and get wet, you're going to want a better sleeping bag no matter how cold it is or is not. Plus there's the wind to consider.

A fleece bag won't save weight as opposed to a good synthetic or down mummy. Won't save space either--fleece doesn't compress, and it's heavy for its insulation value.

I'm with #1: a good 0 or -5 (C) bag is about right. I like synthetics for all the usual reasons, but that's another discussion.

Hope that's helpful.

All right, thanks to both of you, I am convinced. I will ditch this not-so-great idea and take my normal backpacking sleeping bag. :)

You can do the Fitz Roy and laguna Torre treks as dayhikes from El Chalten Specifically the campground at Fitz Roy isn´t a great deal. Laguna Torre is better. But the weather is highly unpredictable in these places and even in the middle of the summer it can get really cold
