you passport for renting a motorbike?

hello,

don't know if this is the perfect branch but as it happened to me in Laos..post it here.

Story (as short as possible:)

Met 2 neighbours, girl/boy at the hotel and next day went out together to rent a motorbike, they rented 1 and I rented one.

They went an other way so we went dfferent paths.

When I returned to give my motorbike back to the lady she wouldn't give back my passport because the couple didn't bring back their helmets......(don't ask me how it's possible to bring back the motorbike without the helmets....this is the story).

I had nothing to do with them so I wanted to get my passport back and i must say got upset about that.

But, queston: how do you deal with giving your passport for renting a motor bike, what are your experiences and if so, clever clues?

thnx,

If they want to keep your passport, go elsewhere. Theres plenty of posts on Thailand Branch about renting motos.

Did you get your passport back??

It is scary leaving your passport with small enterprises, be it hotels or rental places and the security of your valuable document often seems inadequate. The owners of the establishment know that they have an excellent bargaining tool in the event of lost items or damage. There seems to be no way around it in most cases.
To date, of the hundreds of times I've handed over my passport, I've retrieved it without problem, so for me, it is just one of many small risks I take when enjoying what the world has to offer.

Ive found it hard to find places to rent a moto without leaving passport in thailand... the only other real alternative is leaving a large bond instead. But in the scenario you point out you probably would of been left waiting to try and get your large bond back anyway.
