Best (cheap) places in Western Malaysia?
My sister and I are two young travellers who are getting into KL from Vietnam in April, and fly out of Singapore 2 weeks later. We have absolutely nothing planned, so any suggestions welcome! I've seen some things to do in KL like the Batu caves, and the towers, but what about further up the coast? We would love to go to some beaches!

I second Westwoods advice.Just as an alternative though since you specify cheap, after KL,head down to Malacca for a few days (very laid back and fairly cheap), then hit Tioman Island. Juara beach is very nice and relatively isolated. Plus it is an easy plane hop over to JB or Sing, or even an easy days ferry and bus.

You don't need to book your bus tickets online, it's very easy to do that after you arrive. I found JourneyMalaysia helpful in searching bus timetables etc.Ditto Mikehuxley's advice re the city of Malacca. Best time to arrive there (IMO) is a Friday, stay three nights before heading down to Singapore. The reason for this is the Jonker Street nightmarkets

Find budget hotel in Bukit Bintang area in KL, many historic, cultural place around the city such as Batu Caves, China Town, Little India...etcGo to Melaka the Historic City (2 hours) by bus, maybe stay for 1 or 2 night or,
Go to Penang (4 hours) by bus, stay for 2-3 days in George Town or Batu Feringghi (beach area) or,
Go to Taman Negara if you like nature (National Park) (4 hours) by bus, coach...
or White Water Rafting and Caving at Gopeng (2 hours) ... or maybe
Go to Islands especially at Eastern Peninsular Malaysia (7 - 8 hours by Coach) (Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang)
If you have more time, maybe you can fly to Borneo (2 and half hours fly) Mount Kinabalu.
