mobile sim cards and airtime in Africa

We are doing a self-drive trip through Southern and Eastern Africa soon and wanted to know if anyone could tell us how easy it is to get mobile phone sim cards and airtime in each country?

Our intended route from South Africa is Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana.

It's so easy! As long as your phone is unlocked, you just go to a cell phone shop in any city and get a sim card, then top up with minutes - you can buy minutes from corner shops or people on the streets. You might have to register your sim card though, when you go to a dealer, which could take up to 30 minutes and a bit of paperwork.
