I have 10 days...Berlin, St Petersburg....TrainI'm looking to chaperon the folks for a spring trip. They'd like to see at least one of Berlin or St Petersburgh, and spend time travelling by train.
Is it feasible to do London>Berlin>St Petersburgh by train, read it was no longer possible.
Also, dya reckon it's worth it? I theory i can get us from home to berlin in 24 hours overland for £120 A few days in Berlin and then St Petersburgh,
Could we go via vilnus, i guess vilnus is another overnight, then an over night to st petersburgh
we'd be flying home, so the 10 days would be to get to berlin, few days in berlin, get somewhere else (been to prague, budapest, krakow) st petersburgh would be ideal, maybe moscow, maybe ukraine
What would you do?

1Sounds problematic to me...first of all, you'll incur the cost of visas to Russia which will add to your costs...secondly, if you're taking the train for this journey, then 10 days doesn't leave you much time to work with...getting to Berlin, Vilnius and St P means you'll spend more time on trains than on the ground, overall...just checked bahn.hafas.de and looks like all the shortest connections between Berlin and Vilnius and/or St Petersburg, go via Belarus which will add to your woes...
I'd have thought the most practical way to look at this would be to train to Berlin and then try and get the most economical flights to St Petersburg...or fly from Berlin to Vilnius and take the overnight train from there to St P, maybe...

2Train from Berlin to St. Petersburg takes about 30-35 hours. There is no direct train. There is a direct train to Moscow though. Also trains from Berlin to Russia go through Belarus so you would need another visa.
With 10 days it doesn't seem sensible to me to spend more than a day on the train but this is possible. Four days in Berlin, day and a half on train to Petersburg, four days in Petersburg and fly home.
You should be able to take a flight from Berlin to St. Petersburg and then an overnight train from there to Riga and catch a budget flight on Air Baltic back to the UK. I am not suggesting Tallinn because I don't think there is a train on this route, only bus. Also with Vilnius you need to be careful that the train doesn't pass through Belarus.
Look at whichbudget.com or flybudget.com for possible flights.
