Early snow in Morocco

For some reason the Middle Atlas often seems to get much worse snow falls than the High Atlas, and this is the case this week with early snowfalls closing roads for several hours or more in the Azrou - Khenifra - Midelt triangle.

Morocco is exceedingly well-equipped with snow clearing equipment, typically plough blades that are mounted on gritting trucks and even in cases of severe falls (500mm) the main roads are normally open again within 24 hours of the snowfall ceasing. Roads traversing areas of known snowfall have snow barriers that are lowered when it is dangerous to travel.

There has been snow visible all along the mountain range above Ouarzazate already three times this autumn. This is most unusual. There have even been very strong winds and snow-fall in the Dades Valley and snow still around in Ighrem at this end of the snow boundary before crossing Tichka!
