booking in advance for koh tao-chalok baan kao

Hey guys,
as my sister is visiting me for Christmas and we want to go to Koh Tao - Chalok Ban Kao I am wondering if it is necessary to book an accommodation in advance.
We would be there from the 19th to the 24th.
I know this is high season and at first I thought it must be necessary, but I guess there are a lot of guesthouses that are not online and we could maybe find something cheaper there.
We also want to go diving but I don't want to do a reservation with a dive shop as I have heard that the quality is partly really bad and I would like to talk to the instructor first.
what do you think should I make a reservation? Do you maybe know a good and cheap place?

That is a busy period, but I'm thinking along your lines - there's alway a vacancy somewhere.
If you have no luck in Chalok itself, look to the bays to the norh west (Gul Jea, Sai Juan 1 and 2) and immediately east (Shark Bay/Ao Thian OK). Also take a walk up the headland separating Chalok from Shark Bay - some nice places up there and down side tracks to the edge of Chalok's bay.

A lot of us posters think - I wonder what happened to the person asked that question? Any chance you could get back to us on this thread and tell us how you went? Even if you decide to book in advance - I'm always keen on the latest news from different places.
