Getting a Gambia visa after arrival? Current cost?

I've read everywhere Gambia allows last-minute entry for people without visas, but that the visitors have to "submit their passport to the Department of Immigration in Banjul within 48 hours to be issued a proper visa."

What exactly does it mean to "submit my passport"? Will they be holding onto it for some amount of time while they issue a visa? How long will this be? We are American so we do need a visa. Is it possible to get the visa somewhere else (i.e. at the border) if we don't go to Banjul at all?

We'll be coming from Dakar, and don't plan to spend much, if any, time in Banjul (basically want to get right on a river cruise as soon as possible). How much time should we allow for this visa?

And finally, what's the current cost? I have seen prices quotes all over the place ($100 US, 20000 CFA, 35000 CFA, etc.).

Thanks!

Going by my last experience, the price depended on how hungry the Gambian immigration officers are when you happen to arrive. That was crossing from Senegal.

Ha - yeah, I've heard that too. Luckily it seems that people who pay "without receipt" end up paying less than the "real" rate. Where exactly did you get it in Gambia? How long did it take, and how did you cross into Gambia? Thanks!

That was at Karang on the N5 road to Banjul, took a few minutes, that's all. They asked would we buy them breakfast and would we take their 'brother's' vehicle onwards etc.

Hope this is not too late.
I crossed in from Senegal at Karang. Visa issued on the spot in 5 minutes, valid for a 3 month stay. Easy and hassle-free. I paid 1000 Dalasis ( EU passport ), roughly 22 Euros.

Can the visa be purchased/obtained on arrival at the airport?

I am a Canadian, going on an organized birding trip originating in London, and we've been advised to obtain one ahead of time. Googling Gambia visa brings up visa-purchasing agencies who are asking a hefty fee to take care of same.

It's a long w/e here, so had planned on phoning the embassy later this week, but would appreciate other's opinions and experiences.

Thanks.
