Xmas/NY trip pointers please

Hey everyone and thanks for looking.

I'm planning a trip over Xmas/NY with my girlfriend and wanted to get anyone's recommendations of things they loved that maybe we could also check out too. We're after the usual, surf, snorkel, natural beaches, eco places to stay and some culture, architecture, fun times. We're looking to get a little off the beaten track, resorts and the like aren't our vibe.

Planning to go from the 20th tof Dec till Jan 7th, fly into Surabaya and then work our way to Ubud for Xmas Day/Boxing day. Thinking Lombok - NYE and after and then fly out from Lombok or Surabaya. Would love to go to the Gili islands too.

Basically looking for people's holiday memories to recommend how far we should explore, which islands or areas we should make a beeline to (e.g. are we missing out on the north shores if we stay on the 'easier' south), we've got a couple of weeks but that time will fly so we'd love to get as much amazingness in as possible.

Would really appreciate any pointers, links, places to stay or anecdotes, hidden gems and warnings.
