Wellignton on NYE and booking hostels

I'm working at a temp job in Christchurch that finishes on the 29th of Dec, my plan is to spend the next 3 weeks making my way up to Auckland. Is this a really busy time to be travelling around NZ, should I be booking hostels/ferries/bus tickets in advance?

Also I plan on arriving in Wellington on the 31st, does anyone have suggestions on what to do on NYE as a solo traveller? My current plan is to find a party hostel in Wellington to stay at so at least I will have a random group of travellers to get drunk with if I can't find anything else to do.

Thanks!

Absolutely you will need to book trains/ferry/buses and hostels at this time. Not only is all of NZ on holiday but OZ as well. You might find a suitable pass on one of the backpacker buses that would sort your travel and help you to meet people. Hostels like Base & YHA are in great locations in downtown Wellington.

McKenzie House and Cumberland House ( run by UStay) in Wellington both take holiday lets. They're used through the year as university apartments and if that year is anything to go by, they'll still be party, party, party places.

Base and Nomads are the main party hostels in Welly, as they both have bars attached.
Though there will be a few parties on that night; I live in Wellington and usually get invited to at least three different house parties.
