Driving from Paraguay to Uruguay and back
I am thinking of flying to Asuncion, renting a car and then driving to Uruguay (via Brazil). The distance seem manageable in about two weeks or so. Or a little longer, if I detour through Sao Paulo?Any idea about road conditions, rental car requirements (to take across the borders), or anything I am not thinking of?
Of course, I am also seeking ideas about what to see in while meandering about :) As to routes, I can totally skip Iguazu Falls (been there, did not love it really (too crowded/manicured) -- but did love Esteros del Iberá and enjoyed the town of Mercedes) and have already been through that side of Argentina, so I'd prefer to try the Brazilian side this time.
The alternative would be to fly to Asuncion and go up to Pantanal in Brazil (or could I possibly do both?)

The roads are fine. The drivers in Argentina are fast and those in Brazil fast and aggressive. In Uruguay and Paraguay they are more relaxed. As long as you have your papers in order you should have no problems, however in our experience you will need more patience in Paraguay than elsewhere to deal with the police. The radar traps in Brazil are frequent and the drivers treat them with extreme respect (having been driving at 120 Km/h they slow down to 20 Km/h for a radar trap in a 50 Km/h zone, then speed up to 120 Km/h again).
You will need to check the conditions for driving a rental car outside Paraguay with the rental company; I don't know what impact the current suspension of Paraguay from Mercosur will have however doubt that there will be any significant impact (check with the agency).
re distances - going via Sao Paulo will not be "a little longer" - it will double the distance.

Thanks for the reply. While you are right about going through Sao Paulo and the distance, I am wondering if it's still doable in a couple of weeks? Also, anything I shouldn't miss (along the coast, or inland) going down to Montevideo?

DIrect route through Argentina - 4 to 5 days.If you go via Posadas, San Javier, Santo Angelo, Santa Maria, Rivera you will take a couple of days longer however this is the Paraguayan/Argentine/Brazilian Mission country - worth a visit. Also you could take a side trip to Mocona in Misiones - the "other" falls - definitely worth a visit.
If you add in Porto Alegre - another couple of days.
All of this assumes limited stopping time, so if you explore more extensively, double the times.

Thanks, Alan! I've been to the Argentinian Mission Country, but could do it again with pleasure. However, I am running into a bit of trouble finding a car rental company in Paraguay which allows its cars to be taken across borders.
Avis seems to be the only one there from the majors and they do not allow their cars to leave the country.
Anyone knows of a car rental company in Paraguay which would allow their cars to go across borders?

You could try Rentacar - http://www.rentacar.com.py.No idea whether they will, however worth an email or call.
