Cycling across USA
Hi All,I wondered if i could get some advice on what would be the best cycling route from San Diego to Carmel, Indiana. I was looking at Route 66 but have discovered that this is more or less impossible to cycle- I have put in google maps for a cycle route which it has succeeded in giving me.
The problem is, I do not know if this will take into account roads which do not permit cyclist's or other important information.
What is the best way to get started? Will the google map route suffice? What other things do I need to take into account?
Any information is much appreciated!
Thanks

Welcome, I don't specifically know the answer to your questions, but you asked about the best way to get started.A friend of mine cycled the entire length of the Mississippi River and he started by using Google and the Internet. He didn't know how to do it when he began looking, but ended up with a wealth of information. People have done it, they've posted about it, they participate in cycling forums and so forth. It's out there, you just need to use the net to find it.
Good luck.

I think that using a automobile-type mapping service is going to be difficult. You don't want Interstates or even main highways when you're cycling long distances. When I see cross-country cyclists out on the Great Plains, it's usually on smaller paved back roads that run parallel to the big roads. I tried doing a quick Google for "cross-country bicycle routes" and found a number of sites such as adventurecycling.org, biketouring.net, and bikeacrossamerica.org. All these sites had maps and route descriptions. OP, it looks like most of the work has already been done for you.3
Coincidentally, I met a young man the other day who was doing a portion of adventurecycling.org's "Southern Tier" Route. I stopped for a hike and lunch break at Emory Pass, near Silver City, New Mexico. He had just climbed the pass from Hillsborough on the way to Gila Hot Springs. We chatted for a while, and he showed me his route maps. They were basic, but useful, and the routing was quite thoughtful.ADVERTISEMENT
