Canada winter Rockies tourHi guys! So my husband and I are thinking of doing a tour of the Canadian rockies in the January. We are used to winter driving, have a Subie, chains, emergency gear, etc. Here is our itinerary so far:
Vancouver to Whistler
Whistler to Jasper via Hwy 1
Jasper to Lake Louise via Icefields Pkwy
Lake Louise to Banff
Banff to Calgary
Do you guys know if these roads tend to be open in the winter (weather permitting of course). Should we hit up Yoho National Park? Is this the best route to see the higlights of the Rockies?? Any suggestions of things to do in these places?

1Van to whistler never closes unless there is an accident from what I know. The trans canada (1) around Revelstoke opens and closes depending on the snow. Generally its in ok shape.
The icefields parkway between LL and Jasper is usually shitty and will close if there is an avi risk.
Banff to Calgary only closes if there is a major accident.

2Most of Yoho (and the other national parks) is closed off during the winter, so not much to "hit up."
Highway closures aren't common and rarely last long when they do occur.

Hwy 5 Yellowhead has far fewer hills and mountain passes than Hwy 1.
But Hwy 1 is more scenic.
Take 5 to Jasper, 1 on the way home.
Leave the chains, you won't need them in a Subaru.
The roads are all heavily travelled and well maintained except the Icefields, which will close occasionally for a day after a very heavy snowfall. In the unlikely event this happens, wait in Jasper an extra day, or if you must you can detour via Hinton, the trunk road and back onto 95 at Saskatchewan Crossing. That in itself is a nice drive.
For scenery, you'll want to drive Hwy 1 through Kicking Horse and Rogers passes on the way back
