i agree with nijerk. and the fact that he(?) loves mcleod but hates pushkar and jaisalmer for being tourist traps shows that it all boils down to personal taste, regardless of how touristy it is... although the tourists at mcleod are more tolerable than the eurotrash hippies at pushkar. i never had anything against hippies until i went to india..if you're mostly traveling by train, then you can adapt as you go. the only time you'd need to be specific with dates is if you get a flight.

Ps " euro trash hippies" in Pushkar? Seemed to be almost all Israelis when I was last there..19
Amritsar needs just a day or two ... if you are planning to add a visit to the Wagah Border for the ceremony that happens just before sunset everyday.Otherwise there is just the Golden Temple and the Jalian Wala Bagh to see.
Will be worth it to squeeze in Jodhpur in your Rajasthan trip since you'll be visiting places close to that. Cut out days allotted for Jaipur and Udaipur.

DELHI 2 days
(enough to get a taste for the city but not enough to see everything).AMRITSAR 4 days
(2 days too many).DHARAMSALA/McLEOD GANJ 6 days
(2 days too many)MANALI 4 days
(1 day too many)SHIMLA 5 days
(2 days too many)UDAIPUR 4 days
(1 day too many - unless you to to Ranakpur for the Jain Temple) PUSHKAR 3 days
(haven't been there but have not heard good things about this place)JAIPUR 3 days
(3 days too many - there are better places to spend your time)VARANASI 6 days
(2 days too many)KOLKATA 5 days
(enough time to see the highlights)MUMBAI 4 days (here for Holi - is this a good place to spend it?)
(enough time - as far as Holi goes, try to avoid being around drunk men)You haven't mentioned Ajanta /Ellora /Hampi, which are all en-route from Mumbai => Goa. All are worth visiting. I'd put your extra time into visiting these locations. Ajanta /Ellora can be seen one day for each and Hampi at least 2 days.
GOA (9 days - don't know specific places yet)
(never been there, but from all accounts, it's very much a place you either like or you hate).
