First timer....
I've recently put a lot (a lot!) more thought into traveling South America. But I have a problem. I dont know where to start!I have never traveled before. Sure, I've been on holidays here and there, but I have never actually spent a significant period of time away. I have been looking at volunteer sites as this is something I would really like to do but there are just too many to chose from. How do I know I am making the right decision?
Another problem I am facing is finances. How much will I need? I'm not looking for luxury but I am looking for variety. I would ideally like to volunteer, explore, volunteer, explore,etc. People I have spoken to so far have been quite different with their own thoughts of how much is required and the last thing I would want to do is to cut a trip short due to lack of funds. I am looking at going for around 6 months starting in June next year.
If anyone has found themselves in this position before I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

if your planning in staying in hostels thats around 20 dollars a day unless your planning on staying in the worst of the worst cockroach infested bed bug infested german expat living in new zealand nazi owned hostel " hostel independencia" mendoza argentina. i spent 6 months recently and close to 12 thousand ... south america is f$%^$$ expensive unless your planning on eating tuna and pasta everyday and spending most of your time in bolivia i hope you have potatoe sacks full of money!!!!!!!
