3-days katang trail in DONG PHU VIENG NPAHI?
Does anybody have done this trail to the katang people in this NPA? It is organized through eco-guide unit in Savannakhet.
They use local transport for 180km to the east where the trek starts.
Was this worth the effort?

2That's a lot of driving (8 hr?). I would inquire if any town closer to the site might have available local guides. Most every provincial capital has a Lao Tourist Offocie whish has local contacts to translators/guides and drivers and we've met some exellent guides and locals this way!).
That said - I'm sure it will be a memorable adventure!

3I have done this 3 days / 2nights trek back in 2008. This is one of the best trek I have ever done in Laos despite minimal comfort.
The local transport is mainly on a good road on the way to Vietnam and it take about 3 hours in a local Touk Touk. There is a 30mn bumpy ride. I recommend that you take some warm clothes as it can be cold in winter in these villages. It is not as difficult as mountainous trek of Northern Laos but you if you are over 50 and don't like sport, you could find this very challenging.
When you will arrive there, if you want to help the village people, just buy a few more chickens or a small pig (200,000 to 300,000 Kips). This way it helps the very small economy in the village and give proteins to children.

4The park is accessed from M.Phin which is about 130km east of savannakhet.
There is a dirt road that goes right through the park to saravan to the south, with side tracks off this road where the villages are. I havent done the trek but have explored the park several times by motorbike as I have in-laws in nearby M. Phin. Very few foreigners go there and it still a very traditional & poor area even close to the main road. There is no tourism office in M. Phin but there is a plan to open one in Phalanxai which is about 40km closer to savannakhet than Phin (halfway between savannakhet & the Viet border).
