Hi: My husband and I will do the same when we arrive in Holguin in January. We plan on spending the first night in Holguin and then carry on from there the next day or later. The Lonely Planet guide book (and I put it on my Kindle) shows interesting things to do, great sights and casas in Holguin. Cab to Gibara is $20. cucs... there are trucks that go there as well, which sound like a good experience. After Sandy I wonder what we will find there so I am interested in hearing a report on your findings. Enjoy!
There was also a casa, in Holguin, that would pick up at the airport. Let me know if you want that address.

Sorry I can't find that address for the airport pick up. I will continue to look... www.cubacasas.net is a very informative site if your interested. We do not know where we will stay in Gibara, something near the beach I hope... I hear there are casas to rent on the beach across the bay?

There are at least two across the beach. The one we've stayed at twice is "Hostal Las Brisas" .The owners both speak French and some English as both have worked in France. Great food, pleasant atmosphere.Insist on room facing the sea. Many other good ones are but a block or two, such as "Los Hermanos"where it is hard to beat the cooking. I've seen one of owners of the Spanish owner of the Melia group eating there with his family and chauffeur.Great little fishing village and nice environs.
