You and millions of others have been duped by new-agey/apocalyptic types who seem to have deliberately misinterpreted this non-event. It is simply the end of a cycle, much like any other calendar. Imagine if we had to "prepare" every year for catastrophe on December 31.

Even if you could make it down there, you would hardly have time to get a self-sustaining farm/well/household ready.

If Patrick Geryl is Right: The Trigger

As I recounted on the UrbanSurvival site this week, when 2012 research Patrick Geryl started to make predictions about upcoming earthquakes with predicted magnitudes, and he turned in an impressive 11-"hits" in a row, I started taking his predictions very seriously. Now, we're only a couple of weeks (two weeks from Sunday) from when his new prediction "window" opens. If - as expected - he scores once again - this time with an 8.0 to 8.5 earthquake, it will be time to immediately "pull the trigger" on a large list of last-minute expenditures on vital prepping goods. This weekend, we review some of the possibilities and some of the options we will be putting in place so that upon hearing of a 7.9 or larger quake in his window, we'll be ready to order "topping off" supplies because his December forecast is grim at best.

If you really believe that nonsense, what on Earth possessed you to choose Ecuador? There is nowhere in Ecuador that would be safe if there are cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Short of camping out in Yellowstone Park, I can't think of a less suitable place to hunker down and wait for the end of the world.

You seem to be talking down to me. You have no idea who I am and whether or not I have been inordinately influenced by your definition of those thinking on this vital subject.

The fact is I have spent years living in Guatemala and Honduras with Maya people and have come to believe that their culture is superior to any other on earth. They do not punish! Know any other culture like that?

The Mayans (that I know) for most part believe that no cataclysm or earth changes will occur on Dec 21. They seem to think that a new Higher consciousness will evolve and that many fewer peole will be alive on Dec21. Most common belief of my Maya friends is that nuclear accidents or wars(Iran-Isreal) will wipe out many in a short time and those spared will regenerate a new non punitive, sharing, loving and committed culture to move the world on to greater evolvement. There is no doubt in my mind that the present world consciousness is the worst that has existed in recorded history. On that I agree with the Christians and the likely outcome!

I chose Ecuador as I needed a place where there is vast uninhabited areas, plentiful water, at altitude and away from past earth changes (I have not deleted that idea). Southern Ecuador has no major volcanoes and seems repressed from the earthquake fault lines, So, for now I have chosen Vilacabomba as my base to proceed. Probably in the Nat Park there. I am on a one month plan and have been procuring supplies in Cuenca. Cajas is too cold and infertile for life after Dec21. Be there or be square!

I had a retreat outfitted in Cambodia where I have lived the past 5 years. I had supplies for 90 plus days for four people. In a story too long to be told, all of that was taken away and I am once again with my backpack and no particular direction other than to find a place to hu8nker down on Dec 21 and to do it quickly

In my research on the subject many websites exist that propose safe areas around the world. The continent of Africa is arguably safest but I cannot afford that as I live on $1000 mo. Pluses for Ecuador are water(most vital) altitude (away from possible sunami) fertile land and low costs!

I am headed for Vilacabomba on Nov 27 and will hire a guide to take me to places that would seem to fit the bill!!

Relax doomsayers, the Maya people did not really mark their calendar for the end of the world on December 21, 2012.

As tourists book hotels rooms in Mexico's Maya Riviera and Guatemalan resorts ahead of next month's fateful date, experts are busy debunking the doomsday myth.

The apocalyptic prophecy that has inspired authors and filmmakers never appears in the tall T-shaped stone calendar that was carved by the Maya around the year 669 in southeastern Mexico.

In reality, the stone recounts the life and battles of a ruler from that era, experts say. Plus, the last date on the calendar is actually December 23, 2012, not the 21st, and it merely marks the end of a cycle.

So no need to build giant arks, because the terrible floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions depicted in the Hollywood blockbuster 2012 were not prophesied by the Mayas.

"The Mayas had a cyclical idea of time. They were not preoccupied with the end of the world," Mexican archaeologist Jose Romero said.

The stone, known as Monument 6, was located in El Tortuguero, an archaeological site that was discovered in 1915.

Broken in six pieces, the different fragments are exhibited in US and Mexican museums, including Tabasco's Carlos Pellicer Camara Anthropology Museum and New York's Metropolitan Museum.

The first study on the stone was published by a German researcher in 1978. Since then, various archaeologists have examined its significance and agree that it refers to the December 23 date.

"The last inscription refers to December 23, 2012, but the central theme of Monument 6 is not the date, it's not the prophecies or the end of the world. It's the story of (then ruler) Bahlam Ajaw," Romero said.

The final date represents the end of a cycle in the Mayan long count calendar that began in the year 3114 before Christ. It is the completion of 13 baak t'uunes, a unit of time equivalent to 144,000 days.

"It is not the end of the Mayan long count calendar, which is endless. It's the beginning of a new cycle, that's all," said Mexican historian Erick Velasquez.

Though the Maya made prophecies, they looked at events in the near future and were related to day-to-day concerns like rain, droughts, or harvests.

The belief that the calendar foresees the end of the world comes from Judeo-Christian interpretations, the experts said.

Velasquez warned against giving too much weight to Monument 6, noting that it is just one of more than 5000 stones from the Mayan culture that have been studied.

The earth still has a few years left, even in eyes of the ancient Maya: Some stones refer to the year 7000.

the history and belief of the mayan culture is most likely great like many early civilizations. Many cultures have had their own 'calendars' and have even predicted the end of the world. Like everything else (especially in American) dec 21 has been hyped to the extreme, some people even believe it!
The amazing thing is, is that people like you believe it, and do things like stockpile supplies in thirdworld countries, and talk religious mumbo jumbo.
Yes, i am talking down to you again, I for one, will be enjoying my life when im retired rather than talking in circles and wasting my time with things that will never happen. Ironically, I fly into ecuador on the evening of DEC 20th, maybe you should meet me and we can have a beer and you can talk your head off about your theories, and dont forget, you have a few pallets of toilet paper to pick up in Cuenca that need to be stored in your cave, enjoy your retirement.

Or both of you can enjoy a new age together? OK - has the age of Aquarius now ended and we are onto the next age? Pisces? So now we can respect seafood (much as Iove eating it) and not over fish the oceans etc before it is too late?

Excellent post on Maya! Lincoln was purported to have said, when writing to his son, "please excuse the length of this letter, I didn¨t have time to write a short one!" You nailed the conventional view of Maya culture and prophesy!

I have moved to Vilcabamba and found a natural oasis 4 KM east. The owner also has a refugio in the higher elevations for Dec 21. However, no fish but grasshoppers are an abundant source of protein!
