Saxony Switzerland Region for 6 nights in December

We are planning to explore the Saxony Switzerland Region during December. We can afford 6 nights. We have a car and thus able to cover more distance such as Meissen, Seiffen and Goerlitz etc. We would like to have your comments whether the stay is too long. We have booked in Hotel Ausspann in Heidenau. Thank You.

Hi....

As you have a car, then of course the stay isn't too long. In fact, it sounds perfect.
Switzerland is a small country and you can see something different throughout the day, every day.
Once you feel you've covered everything in one area, get in the car and go somewhere else.
It'll be easy to see so much in 6 days by car, certainly much more than on any public transport mode.
Hope you have a really great trip.

Ah! - I think #1 has missed the word "Saxon"!!

The answer to your question might be weather dependant - so I trust you've got winter tyres / chains to meet German highway regulations. Away from the more remote areas such as Seiffen, public transport is good to excellent. Just in case you might like to refer to
http://www.vvo-online.de/en/fahrplan/index.aspx for Meissen - Dresden - Bad Schandau , http://www.zvon.de/ for Görlitz, Bautzen, Zittau, Oybin and
http://www.bvo.de/ for Seiffen, Aue, etc.
I think the first two include maps, but not the last

Personally I could spend 6 weeks there, not just 6 days. Don't forget the areas south of Dresden (Bastei, Pirna, Bad Schandau) and then east from Bad Schandau along the Czech border to Oybin and Jonsdorf. If there are no insurance etc complications, there is a lot to see on the Czech side of the border too.

Mike, thanks for the good references. I hope the weather will turn out fine (and not the 2010 Blizzard).

I'm on rented car so I guess Czech is out of the question. Yes, Bad Schandau, Pirna etc will be one of our destinations there.

I'm sure you'll be able to take a German hire car into Czech Rep so long as you tell them. I've taken an Austrian plated car into Czech, Slovakia and Hungary on one occasion.

Agree with Mrs Trellis - provided you tell your car hire company it shouldn't be a problem. You may have to pay a supplement for additional insurance costs, but otherwise it should be OK

Did you ask first, or just do it anyway?
