starts in Osa, finishes in Santa Teresa, what's in between ?Hi there,
We are a newly wed couple and we have 2 weeks in Costa Rica, between 2-15 December.
We are taking a 3 day guided hike in Corcovado (Los Patos - Sirena - La Leona) and we'll fly back to San Jose on 6-Dec morning.
We have 9 full days/nights and we have to be back in SJO on 15-Dec morning.
We are planning to rent a 4*4.
We want to spend our last 4-5 days in/around Santa Teresa/Mal Pais, chilling.
So we have 4-5 days in between. We are not sure what to do.
We are considering the following:
- Arenal (hotel campoverde or arenal observatory lodge or ? )
- Celeste WaterFalls (la carolina lodge) - * not so sure because the lodges website says, it is the "wet" season
- Rincon (too far ? )
After reading the forums, we do not want to go to Monteverde, especially after Osa.
We are nature lovers, we enjoy hiking, rafting, horse riding etc. We want to stay away from touristy atmospheres.
We are open to any suggestions to fill our 4-5 days. Pls just keep in mind that we will start these 4-5 days in San Jose and end in Santa Teresa/Mal Pais.
Thanks for all help :)
Warm wishes from Istanbul / Turkey.

I have a few questions:
- In maps, arenal observatory lodge looks a bit out of the way ? Should we consider elsewhere for that reason? like hotel campoverde ?
- Can you recommend a place for white-water rafting on or close to our way ?
- From Celeste to MalPais, should we drive through Puerto Moreno, or take ferry from Puntarenas ? (is the car ferry expensive? and personally, i enjoy driving if it is a scenic pleasant drive - road conditions do not bother me much and I am comfortable with bad road conditions)

3arenal observatory lodge: it depends on what you are looking for. it is a bit "out of the way" but my favorite place to stay in the arenal area. a very large property with their own trails and lots of wildlife. they have a free guided tour every morning. but if you want to be close to the town of la fortuna, it's not the best place.
for whitewater rafting: desafio or rios tropicales
from the tenorio national park, don't go through puerto moreno. take the ferry from puntarenas. here's information about the ferry http://www.nicoyapeninsula.com/general/boat.php or - you can drive one way and take the ferry back. to drive, you would go to nicoya and head south from there towards paquera. but driving takes a lot longer. (one reason for the ferry!)
as for the tenorio national park in december -- sometimes it can be very rainy..... sometimes not. the weather in the area doesn't always go by what the seasons should be! ordinarily, i would recommend just playing it by ear and not booking anything to see what is happening with the weather, but that time of year, it's just not feasible. you might wait until the last minute to make your booking and be sure you understand the cancellation policies.
la carolina lodge is a nice place to stay, but very remote. some other options: casitas tenorio, hotel cacao, heliconias lodge, celeste mountain lodge, tenorio lodge. of these, casitas tenorio is my favorite but they might be booked already. hotel cacao is a newish small hotel, near the center of town with a great view of miravalles volcano. friendly, english-speaking manager. heliconias lodge has their own rainforest and trails which could be an alternative if the hike to the rio celeste is too wet for you. however, it is somewhat confused there and generally overpriced. the trails are open to the public so you could use the trails even if you don't stay there ($12). celeste mountain lodge is "on the way" from bijagua (the closest town to the park entrance) to the park. tenorio lodge is a bit further away, really nicely-done bungalows and not much else.
solohobo has a habit of using the shorthand version of "celeste waterfalls" but that is really just misnamed. you will be going to the tenorio national park for the hike to the rio celeste and the waterfall. look here for more information http://www.govisitcostarica.com/region/city.asp?cID=455 and here http://www.moon.com/destinations/costa-rica/the-northern-zone/highway-4-upala/tenorio-volcano-national-park also note that there is a new road that leads from bijagua and joins up with the old road to the park. this road is in very good shape. (i was there a couple of weeks ago).
