Northern Thailand on 5 days, peak seasonHello, friends,
I will head to Northern Thailand at the beginning of January (hopefully before the smoke). I will have five days-four nights with a family of 5 (ages vary from 70 to 13, everyone healthy but not willing to take a heavy track). I made my research, but it is difficult to decide, since I have never been there, and cannot completely see the differences between places. We love nature, culture (temples, of course). Maybe some elephant camp (heard there is one really against animal abuse, no riding), hilltribes, markets. Thought of arriving on a Sunday, see the walking market in Chang Mai and go for a loop. Given the ages of my people, maybe hire a driver/guide to keep everything smooth and risks away.
Any suggestion for itineraries? Mae Hong Son is really nice? Seems it is better to make an excursion than one-day-trips from Chiang Mai. Is it correct? Or would it be better to go to another place (Chiang rai, or any less crowded city) for a base?
Thanks so much for all the help!

2We did the Mae Hong Son loop back in 1995 in the back of a songthaew. We went out one day, overnighted in MHS and then returned back to CM. Sure, its a long way but we had ample time to stop off at various places (a National Park, hot springs to name a couple) each way. We thought it well worth it in spite of the distance.

3Yes Mae Hong Son is very nice!
In Chiang Mai have many nice places that you can visit. If you can drive well it's pretty good to have a car to do sightseeing there with your family.
Temples around town,Mon Jam Hill is nice, Chian Mai Zoo and Doi suthep, Doi Inthanon is worth visiting. MaeSa Elephant Camp etc, NimMan Hae Min Street (Kind of Sukhumvit in Bangkok for eating/little shoping , Have a nice dinner at The River side at night.
Well, If you have a chance Khun Chang Kian is really worth visiting.
Mae Hong Son can do Pai.
