Visa/Passport
I am a South African citizen, born in South Africa. My mom (since deceased) was a British Citizen and my dad South African. I was born in 1992. I would like to go visit my mom's family with my 1 year old son in the UK, but have been declined a VISA on the grounds that I don't have a job here in South Africa. I have been advised to apply for a British passport on account of my mom's British citizenship. Can this be done? Is there any easier or less costly way? I am confused as I've also read about ancestry Visa's etc. What would be the best way for me and my son to get to my British family?3
Hi - and welcome to Thorn Tree. That seems a pretty poor excuse for not giving you a UK visa (not having a job).
My cousin, who lives in Johannesburg, was unemployed when he came to visit us in England.
No problems - and no delays. Is that the only reason they gave you for declining a visa?

Hi battybilly, yes, they said that I do not show evidence of enough ties with South Africa to return because I do not have any worthwile assets or a job ( I live with my dad)8
Yes, that is a standard reason for refusal. It is about 'returnability' ie: the chances that the person will return to their home country before the visa expires.A job or study and property ownership or rental agreements are major factors taken into consideration in regard to this.
Anyway as far as I can see you are already a British citizen and if you obtain a British passport you can travel (or live) there all you like.

Maybe #9, or maybe your cousin and the OP said different things in their visa interviews or had something else different in their circumstances that made a difference.Back in the 1990s, it was impossible for people from the Philippines to get visas to visit the UK unless they had exceptionally high incomes by local standards.
