Drive from Islamabad to Gilgit in Dec.

Hello~~~

Does anybody know that how long will it take to drive from Islamabad to Gigit now pls?

I found lots of answers but all were post in last year. Most said that the KKH was in maintenance so it would take about 22 hours.

Is the status the same now? Still need around 20 hours?

Thanks in advance!!!

Teresa

Hi,

it will take between 20h and 24h. depends in witch bus you are...because busses depart from 6pm till 10pm from pir wadhai in pindi.... and the 6pm bus will wait in besham for the 10 pm bus to make a convoi through kohistan. i was in the 6 pm bus and i had to wait there at besham for 4 hours. :(

Hi thanks for your reply!

Does the bus stop halfway??

One of my local friend will lend his jeep to us. Is it safe if we drive by ourselves?

Thank you!

kohistan is not hte safest area in the world! :)

Bonjour from Islamabad,

It takes 18 to 20 hrs these days, made it 3 times this year from Islamabad and even from Chitral across Shandoor pass.

There are some short breaks for tea and food en route especially at Mansehra for dinner and Dasu, Besham for breakfast, tea.

You'd be escorted with a policeman once you arrive at Besham, close to Indus Kohistan.

As stated earlier, the highway is under maintenance.

happy & safe journey ..

It takes some 20-24 hours. Buses leave from Pir Wadahi terminal Rawalpindi. Take NATCO bus, it is recommended. If don't want to go in the bus from Rawalpindi to Gilgit all the way then take a bus to Besham and then go in the jeep with your friends. Travelling by Jeep would be much more fun since you can also for taking photos on the way and can make stops as well.

If you travel in your own car or jeep not in a NATCO bus .

Bonjour from Islamabad,

Please keep at least 18 to 20 hrs for your private car while having in mind the escort, check points, tea and food stop en route.

Please do keep some 15 pages of the photocopies (Passport front page + Pakistan visa page ) to be handed over at the army and security check points on the way, to avoid the hassles.

The road is very bad and somewhere it is similar to dirt road.

Bon voyage ..

Yes, you will get Police escort when you drive by yourself. If you travel by bus then you won't get escorted.

Dear fanpan111,

In the present scenario, better to travel in a NATCO bus, that's much safer.

In a private vehicle, the trip could be much slower and full of hassles due to changing escorts from 1 region to other.

Good luck ..

One doesn't waist time while changing escort, its obviously safer with police escort rather then with out

Bonjour from Islamabad,

The people from security forces are normally the target of the terrorist attacks in Pakistan, the travel with them is normally very slow due to changing escorts, because Indus Kohistan is a huge area especially the troubled belt, that's been learnt so far.

Have a nice & safe trip ..
