So CC are you saying the rise of the middle class is a social injustice? Odd comment.

No VB, I'm not saying the rise of the middle class is a social injustice, the social injustice is the middle class have rights that those in a lower hierarchy or pecking order don't which is because of the political arena and government officials (in China).

They have the same rights but definitely not the same disposable income.

It's a shame that the party scene is gone. I was there last spring and had a blast. I have a trip booked to Laos in April, but if VV has been gutted, I will go elsewhere. I imagine this will have a significant ( and negative) impact on the financial status of the Lao people in the area.

VB, your #30 was in response to a previous post of mine, which alas has now been deleted. Heavens knows why, there was no "sailor speak" which we have been informed will not be tolerated under the new "guidelines".

To the moderator who deleted my post, it seems a pretty silly thing to do - you start to read a thread only to find it does not make sense because the posts are no longer in order and there are responses to something that is no longer visible.
Way to go to run a good travel website.

Have we? I am a sailor and have not been told anything such!
Where are those guidelines anyway?

At the top of each branch.
We’ve made some changes to how we ask travellers to use Thorn Tree. Strong language of any kind won’t be acceptable, and you’ll find filters are in place to prevent this. Attempts to get around this with creative sailor-speak will be deleted, so please avoid doing this. Off-topic posts of any kind have no place on Thorn Tree and will be deleted

I didn't mind the arrival of the druggies so much as the "S" droppers. I think it was back in 99 or 2000 that under pressure from the international community they changed the drug laws, next thing you know you've got hordes of drunks on tubes and just like that Laos becomes Lao.

Actually somsai, since the French changed it in 1893 to Laos from Lao, it's mostly the neckbeard ultra backpackers who drop the "S" because they think it makes them more authentic and "local." I doubt the drunks care.

I was in VV in Jan. of 2000 and there was no real problem back then other than a bit of weed being smoked. It was a pleasent place to spend a few days and break up the trip between Vientine and LPB. I hope it has gone back to just that as I will be there in a few days.
