NYC - Limousine vs. Taxi

Hi all...

I heard that taking a limousine was considerably cheep, that for two couple going from central manhattan to airport it would be same price taking limmo instead of taxi... is that so? Is so it would be a lot of fun ;)

Any tips on where to book?

I don't know about limos but a livery service basically works the same
except the vehicle looks taxi-like.

I have hailed a livery in the streets of NYC (that's supposed to be illegal). I have not ordered one in advance but I know it can be done, in fact that's supposed to be all they are allowed to do.

Yes, the cost is comparable to cab fare even a little cheaper.

No, a livery service will be more expensive than at Taxi, which has a flat fare from anywhere in Manhattan to JFK.

If you're going to a different airport, it will also be cheaper via taxi. If you want to be sure of pick-up and not have to rely on hailing a cab then you can take a car service. However, if the cost is split by 4 then it wouldn't be that much of a difference. HOWEVER, if you reserve an actual stretch limo, it will cost you much more than a taxi.

I recommend Carey Limo or Carmel. Both can be found via Google.

The standard livery car in NYC is a black Lincoln Town Car (so standard, in fact, that the term "black car" is often used to mean livery car service). While they're fairly plush cars out of the factory, they get heavy enough use in NYC that you may or may not have a more luxurious experience than in a yellow cab.

The standard NYC yellow cab, BTW, is (was) a Ford Crown Victoria long-wheelbase, which is the same chassis as a Town Car with a different body.

Taxi from Manhatten to JFK is a set fee last time I was there...around $50 USD?

Fare to JFK is $52 + tolls.

Random find for a limo is about $80+ for two.

Um, you were asking about Manhattan to JFK, not vice-versa, right?

There is no taxi flat fare in that direction (the other way, yes). The meter fare is probably a little less, unless there is a lot of traffic - or the driver decides to take you the long way.

There is no taxi flat fare in that direction (the other way, yes).
From the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission:
What are the fares concerning trips to and from Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia International airports?

John F. Kennedy International Airport
The TLC has established a "Flat Fare" program for trips to and from JFK and Manhattan. The flat fare is $52.00 plus any tolls. There is no set fare to or from JFK to any point in New York City outside of Manhattan, and the metered rate applies.
(underlining added)

Yes, there is a flat fare.

I stand corrected. Used to be there was a flat fare only one-way (the other way was cheaper on the meter anyway). Thanks for the correction!
