Dollar Car Rental Expedia Travel AdvisoryIf you are booking a car with Dollar, please be very careful about what you sign. I booked a Dollar Car Rental through Expedia. The rate was supposed to be all inclusive. At the Dollar desk, I was shown a series of screens, full of text. It would have taken me an hour to read through them all.
I asked the guy on the desk if he was charging me for anything extra, he said no. I even joked with him if I needed my lawyer to read through the screens.
I was eventually present with a sign here screen, there were no figures on this screen, the guy said just sign to accept your car.
I was charged $122 for extra insurance, tax and admin, that was never mentioned.
They use the electronic signature, and transpose it onto a document that look like you have read and understood the extra charges.
If you want to read more about potential problems, just google Dollar Rental scam.
There was nothing wrong with the car and the original rate was good. Just make sure you don't get scammed for the extra charges.
You would have thought that your credit card company would help you out in these cases, but on this occasion I have found American Express no help whatsoever.
I am still waiting to see if Expedia can help.

1You are to blame period.......
the original rate you where charged for is known as the BASE rate
then your charged extra for insurance taxes and extra charges
which by law must be shown in the companies terms and conditions.
read EXPEDIA's Terms and Conditions while your waiting.
when your asked to sign your agreeing to their, the rental companies
rules this is standard practise.

3I defense of the op. I also got hammered for an extra $300 by Dollar in insurance that I didn't need on returning the car (the insurance was already covered by my travel insurance). I'd pre-paid for the rental before leaving home. The insurance was apparently documented in what I signed on pickup- somewhere! But after a 15hr flight & general disorientation in a new city - I missed it.
It was all smiles as I drove off into the LA traffic - but I really think these companies prey on people who don't travel all the time & overlook hard to find details that aren't clearly stated by the service people.
learnt my lesson!
