See http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx for full fare details (Kings cross is zone 1, Heathrow zone 6, so you need a zones 1-6 ticket).

Each way: £5.30 cash, or if you have an oyster card £4.80 (peak times), £2.90 (non-peak times).

Here's an explanation of what an oyster card is if you don't know http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14836.aspx

Take the bus, it's cheaper.

*Fwoggie....
How long do the quickest buses take from LHR to Central London?
I've never considered using one.

A bus from Heathrow to Central London will take you DAYS! Take the tube. Piccadilly Line goes direct from Heathrow to Kings Cross.

Thanks for that. I somehow had the idea that it only took about 17 hours.

OP doesn't say that they're in a hurry. If they were, then I'd take the Heathrow Express or Connect to Paddington, then change for the Circle line to Kings Cross St Pancras.

tfl shows a journey of approximately 2.5 hours (beginning 9.15am) , taking either two or three different buses.
As each ride would cost £2.30 I can't see how it would be cheaper - or by very little. Not worth the hassle.
The tube is direct and takes just over an hour with no changes.

Oh, buses are great if you want the scenic route. On a sunny day you can't beat 'em. Plus, they go to places you can't easily get to without tube changes.
I'd advise travellers to take buses if they want to see what London looks like. But when time is short, and between major stops, the tube wins hands down.
London is very well served by public transport, I think.

Busses are great for the view from the upper deck however they are sometimes refered to as chav wagons and for good reason.

After a delayed flight from Munich last year, I had to get the night bus to the Strand from Heathrow....it took about 2 hours. I was so gutted to have missed the last tube of the night by minutes. Definately take the tube, as the ride (even during the day) is really not that great.

Billy - when I mentioned 'scenic' I was talking about London generally. A visitor to London misses out on a lot if they always go by tube.
Ed - I thought the chav wagons were west end rickshaws

*13 - go_2.... I didn't mean it to sound insulting in any way.
I just found the expression 'Scenic route', when referring to London, very funny. That's all.
