2.5 days hiking/backpacking suggestion around Vegas

Hi, I will take a friend to southwest for a short trip, car camping/backpacker/hike. Ticket has been purchased, fly in vegas 12/8 Saturday noon, fly out 12/10 Monday 11:30pm at night.

I've been to these places around that areas (using LAS or PHX as base)
1. death valley 3 times(driving tour of most part of park, including titus canyon, never been to racetrak yet. July and Dec)
2. valley of fire once (Mouse's Tank and Petroglyph Canyon, didn't see Firewave, Dec)
3. zion twice (Narrows, landings angels, Observation Point, Sept, Dec)
4. byce canyon once(Navajo Trail, sept)
5. grand canyon twice (R2R via south kaibab and north kaibab, toroweap, Sept, Dec)
6. sedona three times (driving tour, no hiking, July, Dec).
7. Wave at Coyote Buttes once (Dec).
8. Navajo NM once (Betatakin)

we prefer car camping/hike, but also open to backpacking.

the places I am considering are as follows (most interested one on the top). I will check the weather 1 days prior to the trip then decide where to go.

1. Coyote gulch (hike in along Hurricane Wash, camping @Hurricane Wash-Coyote Gulch Confluence, hike to Coyote
Natural Bridge then return). this one is tough, the driving hour is about 7-8 hours.
2. racetrak, death valley (if go here, it most likely to be a photographing trip)
3. Havasupai
4. Toroweap (hike Lava Falls Route)
5. valley of fire
6. Grand canyon (down from south kaibab, night at phantom ranch if room vacant, up from Bright angel)
7. Keet Seel @ Navajo NM (but they have already close for the winter, reopen next May)

What do you think of these places in early Dec? Any other place you can recommend around vegas? I can revisit the place I've been to.

thanks,
Hiac

Be prepared for subfreezing temperatures, ice, and snow.

Death Valley likely to be the warmest/driest.

Hey Hiac, I assume you've already done Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area 15 miles
west of :Las Vegas. How about Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona?

This is not a 2.5 day hiking trip. It is a 1.5 day hiking trip - by the time you get out of the airport and drive to a campground or trailhead on Saturday afternoon, it'll be night. And then you have to be back in Vegas by dinner time, more or less on Monday. You will have one full and one half day wherever you go. That's not much.

1. Coyote Gulch is wonderful, but there's no way you have enough time for it.
2. Death Valley might be your best bet, not only because of weather, but also proximity to Vegas
3. No way on Havasupai
4. Toroweap is great, but it seems you've been there once already.
5. Valley of Fire is kind of a minor attraction compared to the others on this list, IMHO.
6. Grand Canyon - would be good for an overnight trip and getting a permit shouldn't be too hard. Consider the Grandview Trail to Horseshoe Mesa, which will be new for you, has a lot to see, and is short enough to be practical for hiking out on Monday.
7. navajo NM - no way, not nearly enough time for the drive and hike, even if the route was open in winter.

There are also some good overnight routes in the Kolob Canyons section of Zion which you might consider.

Hi FlagStuff, I re-read my post, and start to laugh at myself that I listed Coyote Gulch. none of the post I read so far mentioned hiking Coyote Gulch in Dec. I will certainly plan a 4-day-dedicated trip to Coyote Gulch next time.

Funny you mention Grandview trail, I just chat with a friendin PhX about that trail.
I will choose between GC and Death valley

Thank you!

Yea, DV makes the most sense. Less driving, better weather.

If you want a nice canyon to hike in lieu of Jackalope, try Fall Canyon, Grotto, Gower Gulch, or one of a zillion others. Buy this book NOW and plan a few hikes that look interesting.

Hum... I don't know which canyon is on the cover. It could be Fall, or it could be one of many others. The book has over 500! pages and details hikes in hundreds of locations. I'll look when I get home.

One of my favorite 1/2 day hikes is Zabriskie to Golden Canyon and back. Return via Gower Gulch if time and energy permit. The scenery and landscape found in this area is unique and striking. Bring water and shade.
