Separate Car Rental Insurance

Residents of the UK and Europe nowadays often make use of specialist 'excess insurance' policies as a way to save money. I have done this renting in Europe and Asia - you take the rental car with only the basic insurance and then this separate policy insures the excess (or deductable) on that basic insurance - only far cheaper than via the rental company. Examples of such companies are http://insurance4carhire.co.uk/ and http://www.carhireexcess.co.uk/.

Has anyone done this in Mexico or know if it will work there the same way? The whole insurance thing in Mexico is confusing me :-)
{I know that in the US the insurance from the rental company usually has no excess so its not really applicable there.}

None of those qualifies as the Mexican insurance you need.

You must buy it in Mexico.

I have included a post from Sanborn's one of the most recommended Mexican insurance companies. There are many others and I am not promoting their product, just mentioning it for the information they provide.

Non-Mexican insurance (such as that included on credit cards) will cover you in Mexico but there are important differences when you have an accident.

If you are fully insured with a Mexican insurance company then a representative of the insurance company will attend the scene and deal with everything and you will (eventually) be on your way.

With foreign insurance you are initially on your own - you can either pay up (if you have enough cash with you) or wait until the legal system decides culpability and amount of compensation. This can take a day or two and you may be held in jail for that time. If you are considered to be to blame then you have to pay up and then claim back from your insurers. If you can't pay then you have to wait (probably in jail) for your insurers or someone else to pay on your behalf. You will get your money back eventually but will have had to endure an unpleasant experience in the meantime.

repeating this important lines from Queretaro's great post:

"you may be held in jail for that time" and "If you can't pay then you have to wait (probably in jail) for your insureres or someone else to pay on your behalf."

This is not an idle threat. I know someone who stupidly ignored all advice about accidents and spent almost two weeks in a Mexican jail because he did not have insurance, an insurer, or money. He was finally able to get some friends to wire him money. He didn't get his money back.

None of those qualifies as the Mexican insurance you need. This is correct!!!

You must buy it in Mexico. Incorrect, you can buy Mexican insurance from several agents in the USA online!

I consider Sanborn and Lewis & Lewis the most expensive. I have been buying mine from "San Xavier" for years now.
