Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador in 3 weeks?

I have never been to south America so would like to visit as many untouched places as possible in a relatively short time! I have read about these three countries, and not sure if practical to do all three, or if can only go to two, which ones would be best?

I am an adventurous traveler, and will be with my husband so willing to go pretty off track. I tend to prefer not traveling with a guide, or stick to local tours if necessary.

Does anyone have any advice on where to go, and idea of timescales between the different places?

Thanks for your help
Claire

It's doable in 3 weeks but you will need a vacation after your vacation to get some rest...

However, in reality, I would focus on one country. I recommend Colombia... Then quickly visit Caracas (dangerous), Mérida, Quito, Cuenca and Guayaquil...

In Colombia, you can visit Medellín, Cali, Cartagena, Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Parque Tayrona, San Andrés and Provedencia, and Bogotá... If you want to run more, go to Popayán and Villavicencio...

Have a nice trip...

Honestly, I don´t think 3 countries is doable at all in only 3 weeks. Unless you want to fly to every new location. You´d have a better time picking 1 country. Not sure where you´re from, but the distances in the Andes are deceiving large because of the winding mountains, particularly in Colombia. I like Colombia a tad more, but if I had only 3 weeks I´d pick Ecuador cause you can easily access everything, mountains, amazon, & coast within much shorter bus rides, ie. meaning you´ll get more time with your feet on the ground.

I really think attempting 3 countries in 3 weeks would be too hard, too much zipping around in transit, and not enough seeing things. I´ve spent 4 months each in Ecuador and Colombia and still haven´t seen everything I would like to.

You might also find a location you really like and want to spend a few more days, but your ambitious plans will drag you out of the place.

Both countries are beautiful and have much to offer. If you chose Colombia, consider flying between the major cities; if you book flights well in advance then you can get good deals (check out http://www.vivacolombia.co/). In Colombia, I'd recommend Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Santa Marta and La Ciudad Perdida hike, if you fancy a brilliant 5 day hike.

Ecuador is far easier to travel through because of its size and would probably be more enjoyable to do in 3 weeks. Here, I would recommend Quito for a few days, Quilotoa's crater lake, Banos (great for extreme sports) and Cuenca.

Happy travels!
