So taking the slow boat down the Mekong.....like all the other gazillion tourists have done.

Read a lot on the forums and I have a different question.... I've checked the weather forecast and it's showing rain and thunderstorms... Where would be the best place to sit, considering the rain...and hopefully still get a view with all the other people crammed in with me.

Yea doing the in two days... plenty of planning time lol....

make sure you take the reclining sofa towards the back of the boat..
also, ensure you have ample "pain in the arse" pills..
enjoy!!

I did it the other way. Our boat just had seats for 2 on both sides of the boat.

super light weight plastic rain coat. Cheap in local market.

The slow boats are covered so even if it does rain you'll stay mostly dry. Take local weather forecasts with a pinch of salt, even when they mention "thundershowers". It's clear as a bell in northern Thailand now and rainy season is pretty much over. Anyway the best place in the slow boats is in front with less engine noise.

^^
so long as the driver is not some nutta in a hurry, and takes it easy when another boat passes or approaches..

After doing the trip three times now, I believe there is no such thing as the best seat...
the more comfy seat is the seat with the most leg room, IMO..
and that could be anywhere on the boat, front, back, on the roof... all depends on the boat!!

Sounds good always planning for an eventuality of rain.... in Chiang Khong now... all the direct buses from Chiang mai to CK were booked so we had to do CM to C.Rai then to CK which wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be.

Even I who takes rain with me (in other words, I arrive, it'll rain) dont plan for the eventuality of rain. If it does, I can always buy a cheap coat or umbrella from one of the many who suddenly pop up to sell them.

Well we arrived with no rain....until we walked into our hotel then it down poured for approx. 2 hours....

Trip in was easy as pie... good to have two people though as one could go up the hill to get a room as they did book up quickly, when we stopped in pakbang...

They were all seats from what looked like old vans/cars comfortable enough. This seemed pretty standard on all boats except for the ones where they fed you. (Those had more of a dining room table) ... Was funny seeing people with cushions come down to the boat.....

There was assigned seating on the first day..... And then ridiculousness the second day....
