Austin for the V8 SupercarHi
Hubby and I will be travelling to the States next May for the V8 Supercars. I would be interested if anyone could recommend a good car rental, I have looked on the internet but a positive recommendation is preferred. Also I have booked at the Microtel Inn & Suites near the airport, could I pick up a rental near here or would it be more convenient from the airport? We will do a tour around after the race to New Orleans, Florida, Memphis over to Vegas and back to Austin. Also does anyone know about transport to the race or carparking. I would much prefer some sort of transport so we can have a couple of drinks, I believe the Formulas are racing next week so hopefully any teething problems will be sorted by May! Looking forward very much to visiting Austin, we are from Adelaide South Australia which is Austin's sister city.

1Is "V8 Supercars" an Aussie version of NASCAR?
To answer your questions:
Any of the five or six major rental car companies can rent you a car with unlimited mileage and unlimited geographic travel (within the 48 conterminous states.) Let a travel site like Kayak find a good rate for you. You don't mention liability insurance on the car so I presume you already have that expense covered. Otherwise, see FAQ 146.
Pick up the car at the airport. It is ten times more convenient. The "savings" finding a "downtown" rental office is rarely worth the hassle or the "savings." Remember that you're on vacation.
You are aware that a "tour" of "New Orleans, Florida, Memphis over to Vegas and back to Austin" is a minimum of 4000 (6440 Km) to 5700 (9177 Km) miles depending on what you mean by "Florida." That is why you need a rental car from one of the major car rental companies. The cut-rate companies simply don't support trips of this time or distance. That is why they are "cut-rate."
Any race-day transportation between the track and wherever should be described on the V8 Supercar website. Good luck with that. Most US racetracks have enough parking that transportation elsewhere is not a priority.
Have a great time.

2#1 is right, the major car rental companies are interchangeable, and the minor ones would be more of a headache to deal with given your ambitious driving plans. You would be much better off doing short-term rentals and then flying to Vegas and Florida (esp. if you are trying to get to Miami--that is a long drive!).

3Thanks for the replys...we are aware of the distance. If we travel Sth Aust to Melbourne it is around 800kms one way, do it in 9 hours no problems. My husband is a tanker driver so enjoys driving. We have allowed 4 weeks to see it all so should be fine. I have got travel insurance with cover for rental cars, but always take out complete cover as well. We are heading to Orlando in Florida.

5Ah CascadeBob. Houston is habitable too, you just have to live inside the loop :). OP: When you travel from Austin to New Orleans, there are a lot of good places to stop along the way for bbq and more. Search "Lockhart & bbq". Also, if you like extremely good cocktails, stop by Anvil in Houston if your drive takes you there in the evening.
