One week trip in BangladeshSelam...all. I'm here again. I'm chinese and plant o visit Bangladesh during spring festival in 2013, Because time is so precious, i just plan to visit Dhaka and Khulna districts (for the rest of this country, inshaallah next time).
Following is my itinerary:
•09/02 Sat. Day 01: Arrive Dhaka (13:10 am). Dhaka City a bit. Start journey to Sadarghat River station (By Cycle Rickshaw) to Catch Rocket Steamer. 6.30 p.m rocket will start its journey.
•10/02 Sun. Day 02: Get off earlier in Hularhat (nearly 11:00 am) and go to Bagerhat by bus to visit 60 Domed mosque. Stay overnight at Bagerhat.
•11/02 Mon. Day 03: Go to Mongla, have a day trip to Sundarbans ( Any toursim agent provide one-day tirp to
Sundarbans or if i could hire a boat by myself, how much i should pay for the service) Stay overnight at Mongla
•12/02 Tue. Day 04: See around Mongla, in the afternoon go to Khulna. Stay overnight at Khulna.
•13/02 Wed. Day 05: Take Sundarban express No.725 from Khulna (20:00 pm) to Dhaka.
•14/02 Thur. Day 06: Arrive in Dhaka (05:35 am), Visit old Dhaka, Hindu Street, Sadarghat River Station, Pink Palace, Armenian Church & etc. Stayovernight at Dhaka.
•15/02 Fri. Day 07: Mornig Show around Dhaka and 14:00 fly back to Kunming.
Here comes my questions:
1) Is it possible to take one day trip to Sundarbans in Day 03 ? Should i come to Mongla very early in the morning?
2)Does Sundarban express No.725 still on working at present?
Thanks a lot in advance and your advice is highly appreciated!

1train number 725 from kulna to dhaka seems to be running, every day exept friday, i checked the bd train website
if you go on day 3 to mongla , your time to take a boat to sundarbans will be very limited, the same day almost impossible i would say, you have to find a hotel, check in, find a boat negociate the price, and at 6pm its dark....maybe get a short boatride the nextday and leave to kulna late afternoon.
or better go to kulna on day 5 , arrive there at lunch and get the train in the evening
always remember, not many people speak engflish and things are not always straightforward...

2Many thanks, as you've mentioned it's a little rush to fullfill a one-day trip to Sundarbans, so i decide to drop this site in my plan. Barisal seems to be a more comfortable and interesting place for me, nice country side and a beautiful masjid (i just came cross mahmud's introduction to GUTHIA BAITUL AMAN MOSQUE).
So could i get off in Barisal ? I found the information about one rocket steamer goes to Barisal in other topics and the website of BIWTC. is it the same one you've mentioned a lot, which goes till Morolgonj. If so, what's the time the steamer arrive at Barisal? I'll stay there one night and then head to Bagerhat, Khulna.
Thanks again for your remind, btw your website is very cool!
One more quesiton:
Is it possible to buy postcards and post them in other cities like Barisal,Khulna.. ?

3hi, honestly i have not seen a single postcard in bangladesh, even not in india, seems to be a thing of the past.
i think the rocket arrives in barisal early morning, probably Mahmud knows a lot better,
i arrived from dhaka in barisal by a normal launch about 5.a.m, still dark there.
i would suggest you hire a rikshaw and just drive around and see the area, i did that in a village called Galachipa, also reachable by launch from Dhaka overnight, the area was STUNNING!
or drive from barisal by bus (6am near the port)to kuakata, the trip itself ,with the ferry crossings is worth it.

4I think there are lots of places in and near Bagerhat to see, I remember the 9 domed mosque, the 67 domed mosque, the museum, a very old Hindu temple, tomb of Kan Jian Ali, lots of local tourists too. There are small maps you can get there to guide you, or read up before you go. Bus from Bagerhat to Khulna is 1.5 hours approx. and there are lots of buses.
In Mongla, you can take a 2- 3 hour trip to the Sunderban field station, you can walk around on wood walkways there, and see a little of the mangrove swamp trees and small creatures like lizards, birds, deer and crocodiles, but it is limited and not very large. Cost maybe 2000 Tk from boatmen in Mongla. If you want to see more it is more complicated and more expensive. Not much more to see in Mongla.
Yes, train to Dhaka runs every night at 2000 except Friday from Khulna. Ticket office at railway station. Arrives Dhaka Airport around 6am, Dhaka city centre around 7am. There are first class seats, other classes, sleepers, even the roof (!) depends on price.
If you need more info ask any of us ....

5And by the way , its important to call a ferry "Launch" in bangladesh, otherwise they dont understand, especially people who speak no english, but launch they all understand and will point you in the right direction
