Yellowstone

Can we just turn up at Yellowstone in April/May next year, or do we have to book? We shall be travelling in an RV.
Thanks.

You might want to check the park if its even open, that is still winter season in the mountains in April. May can be pretty cold as well. I would make reservations at the RV campgrounds for sure, Lamar Valley is one the better areas for hiking and wildlife.

April and May will be very cold and there may still be road closures.

You should book ahead if you want to stay in the in-park accomodations that are open.

The road from Jackson Hole into Grand Teton National Park did not open until May 8, 2009, when I was one of the first in line with my travel trailer. There was still a lot of snow piled up alongside the highway. I think that it was Madison Campground where I parked for the night. The second night, I parked discretely in the Old Faithful Lodge parking lot. The lodge had just opened for the season that day and other lodges were still closed. Most of the other campgrounds were also closed. The entrance to Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone NP, is open year-round, but I don't know if the road to Lamar Valley is open year-round.

Your best source of information about what may or may not be open in Jellystone National Park is here. April and May are not good months to see the park if you want to SEE the park. The only certainty is that Park Headquarters at Mammoth Hot Springs is open . I flew over that part of the world yesterday and there is already a lot of new snow in the mountains. What the weather and snowfall will be next April and May is unknowable.

Good luck. Once the park is "open" reservations are always a good idea.

The American National Park System is quite clear on their regulations. Visitors, both nationals and non, are not, I repeat NOT, permitted to "just show up." Due to the high volume of visitors at some parks such as Yellowstone, they have implemented an on/off day for visitors based upon the first letter of your last name. Thus, if your name begins with an A, you can enter on days which allow A-K. If your last names begins with Z, you'll have to wait for the second day to enter. All this info can be found on their site of course.

The park is always open.
The amenities and most roads are what close. The road from the north entrance to the northeast entrance is always open (barring a storm).
