Above Inflation Price Rises to Improve Services ! !....Anyone been on London trains over the last few days?
Signal failure at Clapham Junction and King's Cross completely closed for hours (security alert).
Utterly horrible trying to get anywhere within a reasonable time.

214 years ago I used to have to go from Watford to Preston and the walk on fare was £91, I think. Now it is £334. I remember the zone 1 fare going from 90p to £1 in 92 or 93. Now a zone 1 cash fare is £4.30. I wish my wages had gone up by the same rate. You wonder how much it will cost in 10 or 15 years.

4Part of it is to pay for chronic under investment in the rail network for the 40 years pre privatisation.
Part of it is to subsidise regional train services that the operator concerned would never run otherwise, due to lack of demand, for example half hourly trains during Tuesday working hours between Cardiff and Merthyr Tydfill (which only has a population of 30,000).
Part of it is to pay for the ridiculous cost of leasing trains, because (in relative terms) operating licenses are so short nobody will buy the things. You tend to depreciate trains in your books over 25-40 years, and no license lasts that long. You lease them instead (takes the asset cost off your books), which passes on the depreciation to someone else, which consequently chucks in a big profit margin to mitigate that.
There are lots of new rail projects coming along for rail in the UK. I can't be bothered to list them - see http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/jul/16/9bn-railway-investment-unveiled-cameron - but basically in the summer the Tories unveiled £9.4bn worth of new investment in rail, then tried to make you not notice that you'd be paying for it.

I wouldn't agree that they have been chronicly under invested. BR has masses of investment. May be not enough but hardly chronic. Mau be if they hadn't have wasted what they got.
Look at some of the waste. Waterloo International. North Pole, Night Star. The SW Trains pre desiro, don't know the name, etc etc etc.
