Mabuya Camp

My wife went down to lilongwe this week and stayed at Mabuya Camp, on going out for the night she didnt want to leave her phone and ipod in the dorm so locked them in Mabuyas 'secure' safe, as soon as reception opened the next morning she asked for them back only to find the ipod missing. There are only two keys to the safe one held by the owners and one with the barman, the owners only answer was 'its strange' and to not involve the police as it would only cause problems, now obviously one of the two key holders have nabbed this, I'm guessing thinking they could get away with it (which they have) as my wife is malawian and wouldnt kick up a massive fuss, but this has p****ed me right off, so I think other people should be warned

Be aware someone on the staff at Mabuya is a thief

Yeah i stayed here and though that the white staff were a right bunch of tools of the highest order. I did leave things in my tent the entire time though which suggests that other backpackers are far more trustworthy than lodge staff

Hi Gwymp,
Sorry to hear about this. If you haven't already done so, it would be worth cross-posting about the unfortunate event in the TripAdvisor Malawi forum. There is also a place there to give a complete review of the camp, positive or negative.

Didn“t like the atmosphere there at all ... though probably a good piss up for the annoying gap year kids on their self satisfying volunteer stints.

Mufasa lodge was much more chilled out as well as trustworthy.

Its pending now with trip advisor so hopefully will be up soon thanks TexasTea. I tried posting about it in the mabuya camp facebook group just in case a mistake had been made, they removed me from the group and blocked me within seconds of posting, says it all really!!!

I never liked mabuya to be honest, I've always prefered mufasa, but the wife thought tom and janey were her friends from back in nkhata bay which is why we stay there, needless to say we wont ever be going back there

Un Caracol is totally right, i had the misfortune to stay there during the pretentious world gala of Lake of Stars Festival, which didnt help, but it just seemed like a 'club' for very rude expats with their kids everywhere and either africa-saving volunteer types or dreadful white wannabe rasta sorts and all of these, plus the staff really didnt care about anyone else who simply wished to use their hotel as, god forbid, a hotel. Food was very good though

That is such a shame. I know they have struggled with security in the past but have made a real effort to ensure the lodge is now safe and secure. It is a backpackers and offers basic accommodation but is usually really good value for money for backpackers. It does have lively bar and atmosphere but this suits some clients and not others i suppose. The owners have just had a second baby so this might be why they were a bit distracted. This Mabuya suits certain travelers and not others!

Wow! I appologise that our backpackers caters for families with kids, volunteers, backpackers and that this is a problem for you ric_howard. But I'm glad you enjoyed the food. Gwyn publishing only one side of the story and plastering it all over the internet is a strange way of dealing with something especially when your "wife" dropped the charges. Ultimately when you have been drinking double gins all evening your recollection of what you do with your ipod at 2 in the morning might not be perfect? Please also don't bring race into this, it has nothing to do with it, I have known your wife for a number of years and because of this I allowed her to search the rooms and bags of my staff. Is this a sign of a guilty mind?

blaming it on someone drinking is the easy way out, the iphone was in the safe, the wallet that the ipod was in was in the safe but not the ipod, strange that. She never pressed charges, as she knew she'd never get it back.

But TMixer, why refer to the OP's wife in quotation marks? That in and of itself is sufficiently offensive as to lend credence to the original complaints. IMO.
