Nikko, nozawa, Izu or somewhere else in December

Hi ,
We are returning to Japan in January, mainly for the skiing, but also to visit an old friend in Tokyo.
I have already booked most of the trip, but have about 4 days spare, and trying to decide where to go. At present Nikko, Nozawa onsen or Shiga Kogen ( the latter two for maybe a bit more skiing if the knees hold out) are on the short list and my friend has also suggested the Izu peninsula. Does anyone have experience of these places for a short holiday break in midwinter? Any preferences. We are interested in history, the natural environment, quirky Japan But mainly want to have a pleasant few days, seeing a bit more of the country and maybe meeting people.
Any thoughts? Where would you choose. ( we have had two trips to Kyoto, which we enjoyed but want to see somewhere different, and don't want to hurtle around too much.)
Thanks in advance

Silly me, I've said December in the title, but I meant January.

Izu is great in summer for the beach however I cant imagine what you'd do there in winter except that there are some outdoor onsen that are literally 10m from the ocean.

Nozawa Onsen is good for skiing. You can also see the snow monkeys on the way.

Thanks, that's what I thought. At present Nozawa is winning. Any personal recommendations for accommodation. Looking for close to ski lifts, ensuite, western option breakfast ( just toast OK- I love Japanese toast), , but otherwise not too westernised, if that is not too much of a contradiction in terms.

I only stayed there once and cannot remember the name of the hotel.
From the place I stayed I had to catch a bus to the lifts, which was kind of annoying. So yes it's better to get a place within walking distance.
Also book soon.. last year it got booked out quickly.
