Of course the very poor (and Nica is a poor country) have many other things to worry about.

And they couldn't afford to take the anti-malarials anyway.

Foreign travellers don't have this problem...

I have lived in Bluefields for four years and have yet to meet anyone who has ever had malaria, traveler or local. I have never taken the pills and personally would not advise anyone coming to visit to bother taking the pills.

That being said, apparently there was an isolated case of malaria on Corn Island recently, an expat I believe. DollyD can tell you more; she met the woman.

So yeah, it does exist, but it is so uncommon that you have to wonder if it's worth the precaution. Especially when the malaria here is pretty tame compared to say, central african strains.

I would be more worried about the rain, personally!
